As the world came tumbling down, Shinji realized the meaningless implicit in a homogeneous existence-- he knew there was something...more to life, but he had difficulty grasping what it was. He was paralyzed by his lack of confidence and indecisiveness, spurred by the neglect that seemed all but ubiquitous during his childhood. But at this instant, he felt all his hopes, fears, doubts, worries, and emotions work in solidarity, culminating in a sort of epiphany: he had to reject the zeitgeist and embrace his individuality. So he decided to live. And thus he broke free from his unconscious and found himself, in his physical manifestation, on a beach, with Asuka lying next to him. He stared blankly at the sea of LCL before him as the tide gently ebbed to and fro. Just my two cents
